True Humility Is Staying Teachable, No Matter How Much You Know
“You must be teachable.”
I first heard this during a course early in my career, and it’s stuck with me ever since. It’s such a simple, powerful truth — and one I believe is often overlooked.
As a teacher, I’ve learned to quickly notice who’s open to learning and who isn’t. Some people are stubborn. They’ll immediately say “It’s not possible,” and come up with a hundred reasons why something won’t work. And then there are those who are willing to listen, reflect, and try. The difference is obvious — and it makes all the difference in how they grow.
But being teachable isn’t just for students. As a teacher, I need to stay teachable too. The moment I believe I know it all is the moment my growth stops. With a teachable mindset, I’ve learned from people, situations, and experiences I never expected. Sometimes the best lessons come from the most unlikely places.
This also reminds me of another quote: “When you think you know everything, that’s when the learning stops.”
Stay humble. Stay curious. Stay teachable.
