Passion: Fuel for the Soul

“Only passions, great passions, can elevate the soul to great things.”

— Denis Diderot

What are you truly passionate about?

Just one thing. Not everything. Because while we can multitask, true success often comes when we give our full attention—heart, mind, and soul—to that one thing that truly lights us up.

Think of athletes, especially Olympians. They train for years, tirelessly and single-mindedly, to master one sport. You don’t have to be an Olympian, but that kind of focus and discipline speaks volumes about what passion really looks like in action.

Yet many people say, “I’m not good at anything.” The real question is—have they really tried? Have they put in the effort, made time, stayed consistent, and worked through discomfort? Most give up before they even begin, offering excuses instead of effort.

As a teacher, I’ve met all types of students. Some are passionate for a short while, some have drive but no direction, and some—some truly dive deep, take action, and transform. Regardless of the outcome, they all move with purpose. And when you move with purpose, results follow.

For me, passion has always been dance.

I remember back in Form 6, there was a piano in our classroom. After class, I’d ask my classmate Justin to play while I danced—freely and joyfully. At that time, I had just earned my certification as a ballet instructor, even while juggling STPM exams. I joined every school play and performance I could, not because I was good, but because I loved it.

Even in university, I would return to my room at night and watch dance videos. My roommate, Chin Nguk would often ask, “Why do you keep watching the same thing?” But I couldn’t help it—my heart was in it.

When a friend invited me to perform at an event, I said yes immediately—even though I was rusty. Because passion doesn’t ask for perfection. It asks for presence.

Teaching and dancing may be different, but the fire that drives both came from the same place. I was always looking for classes, searching online for opportunities, and dreaming of the day I could finally pursue this passion fully.

The moment I finished my final degree paper, I didn’t wait. I signed up for a course in Kuala Lumpur, packed my bags, and left my hometown. That decision changed the course of my life.

Passion doesn’t need to be logical. It just needs to be real.

So, I ask you again—what’s that one thing you’re passionate about?
