Perseverance: The Quiet Strength That Shapes Success

I first learned the word “perseverance” from a schoolmate named Pei Qin.
Back then, it was just another vocabulary word, a term we memorised for exams without truly understanding its weight.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, perseverance is:

“Persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.”

At the time, it didn’t mean much to me.

But when I entered the working world, its meaning unfolded in the most real, raw ways.

I started noticing how perseverance was often the quiet difference between those who made it and those who didn’t.

I saw people give up after a single interview. Some left after a few weeks of training because the job wasn’t what they imagined. Others jumped from one thing to another, chasing instant results without patience for the process.

People tend to be impatient.

We live in a world obsessed with overnight success stories. But the truth is — the people who quietly, consistently show up, keep learning, and push through the dull, tough, uncertain days… those are the ones who win in the long run.

One of the best pieces of wisdom I’ve carried with me came from my dad.

He told me:

行行出状元

It means “every profession produces its own outstanding person” — in other words, no matter the path you choose, if you work hard enough, you’ll succeed.

Don’t be afraid to be different.
Don’t be afraid to walk a path less taken.
Because as long as you persevere, you’ll find your place.

I belong to a generation where we’re encouraged to follow our dreams — not necessarily the traditional path of study, career, marriage, children, and retirement.

But honestly… what does anyone truly know about the “right” way to live?
There’s no absolute rulebook.

Whether you choose a conventional life or carve out your own road, what matters is:

  • Are you living with purpose?

  • Are you enjoying the process?

  • Are you becoming who you want to be?

Because at the end of the day — life is just life.
And perseverance?
It’s what carries you through the highs and the lows, the doubts and the detours, until you realise you’ve built something worth being proud of.

It’s the same with whatever we’d like to achieve — it comes down to perseverance.
Keep going even when there’s no one there.
Keep going even when you feel like giving up.
Keep going.

Because the quiet work you put in when no one’s watching… those are the moments that build your strength, your story, and your success.

  1. I still struggle , I want to do so many things, and sometimes I choose too much or too fast. When things slow down or feel dull, I start to doubt myself or wonder if I chose wrong.

But your blogs reminds me that it’s not about doing everything — it’s about choosing with intention, then showing up with consistency, even when it’s hard.

    I’m still learning.

And came out LifeEnthusiast formula after you enlightening me : 😬

    (Goal-setting + Prioritising) × Perseverance + ((Progression) + (−Regression))= Growth
