Take Everything with a Grain of Salt

Oftentimes, we receive advice from many people with different backgrounds. They have so much to say—both good and bad—and sometimes, it’s hard to digest, especially when the advice is difficult to accept. So why take everything with a grain of salt? Because you don’t want to take advice from people who aren’t where you want to be. I often hear people giving advice, and I can’t help but think—if you have no experience in it, maybe it’s better to stay quiet. It’s always easier to say than to do.

Don’t get me wrong. Since childhood, we’ve been taught to listen to our elders because they have more life experience. And I do listen—but not to just any elder or person who doesn’t truly understand me or isn’t a good example.

As we grow, we tend to give more advice. Even as a teacher, I offer guidance to my students. But one thing I’ve learned is that not everyone needs or wants advice. Some don’t appreciate it, while others simply listen and move on. And that’s valid—because to them, your words may not hold value.

Even when giving advice, we need to recognize if the person is open to hearing it. And when receiving advice, we must be mindful—take what resonates, and it’s okay to disregard what doesn’t.

At the end of the day, you walk your own path. If you find someone you truly look up to, take in their wisdom and follow their footsteps. Otherwise, take everything with a grain of salt.
